Permits
Council Approval for Garden Studios
Garden studios are treated as ancillary structures under most Australian planning codes. The 18sqm footprint qualifies as exempt or complying development in most QLD and NSW council areas, provided standard setbacks are met.
If your studio includes a wet area or a toilet, the classification may change and a permit may be required. If the studio is to be used as sleeping accommodation rather than a non-habitable creative space, different rules apply entirely.
